What is in This Collection? [edit | edit source]

Alphabetize and images of population schedules from National Annal microfilm publication T623, Twelfth Census of the U.s.a.,1900. The drove is part of Record Grouping 29 Records of the Bureau of the Census. The index includes all states and the Military (foreign country where census occurred) and the Indian Territory. Images can as well be viewed using the browse option. The census will place the identify of residence on June 1,1900 for each person counted. The drove is arranged alphabetically by state, then past canton, and by enumeration commune (ED). Enumeration districts may not always be bundled in numerical social club within each land.

Population schedules consist of big sheets with rows and columns. The schedules are arranged past state, county, place, and enumeration district. The districts are not always filed in sequential club. The organization of families on a schedule is unremarkably in the lodge in which the enumerator visited the households.

Federal demography takers were asked to record information virtually all those who were in a household on the census day, which was June ane for the 1900 census. A census taker might have visited a firm on a subsequently date, but the data collected was supposed to take been about the people who were in the residence on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each canton was divided into enumeration districts, ane for each enumerator. The completed forms were so sent to the Census Function of the Commerce Department in Washington, D.C. The 1900 demography covers 95 to 97 pct of the population.

The U.South. federal demography has been taken at the beginning of every decade, beginning in 1790, to apportion the number of representatives a state could send to the House of Representatives. In the absence of a national organisation of vital registration, many vital statistics and personal questions were asked to provide a statistical contour of the nation and its states.

Federal censuses are usually reliable, depending on the knowledge of the informant and the intendance taken past the census enumerator. Realize that whatsoever family member or fifty-fifty a neighbour may accept supplied information to the census taker. Some information may accept been wrong or deliberately falsified.
